Across the Lifespan: The Effects of Alcohol and Tobacco Use
The Across the Lifespan section of this chapter describes the effects of drinking during pregnancy and includes a discussion of fetal alcohol syndrome. The National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating birth defects caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy. It is the only national organization focusing solely on fetal alcohol syndrome, the leading known cause of mental retardation. The Web site provides information and resources on this disorder.
